The Artist

Dominique Paul

A Montreal-born multidisciplinary artist who in recent years has divided her time between Longueuil and New York. Her work has been exhibited in more than twenty events and venues. 

2023: Silent Fall, Washington D.C.

Recently, in 2023, a solo exhibition of her work, Silent Fall, was held at the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the Organization of the American States (OAS). There she presented the performative work Red|Rojo|Rouge|Vermelho, created specifically for a special meeting of the OAS in Washington, D.C.

Exhibitions and international presence

She also took part in UnHomeless NYC at the Kingsborough Art Museum and in Mapping Life at the NJCU Visual Arts Gallery. Her videos have been shown at 10 Times Square and at Miyako Yoshinaga gallery, where she is represented. In Europe, her work has been exhibited primarily in France. 

Her work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the AMA and other public and private collections.

2024: Seeing Red, Longueuil

The exhibition Seeing Red (Voir rouge), bringing together major works since 2012, was presented at the Maison de la culture Marcel Robidas in Longueuil in 2024, and received more than 8 000 visitors, a record number for this venue.  This exhibition followed on from several collaborative works developed in the city, where she resides, including the major performance work Animal Population Decline, created with Jacques-Rousseau high school. 

Publications and education

 

DOMINIQUE PAUL has a master’s degree from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia, where she lived from 1998 to 2000, and obtained a Ph.D. in art studies and practices from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) in 2009. 

Her publications include Entre chair et lumière: De la possibilité d’une distance critique par l’objet-image (L’Harmattan, Paris, 2019) and the monographs Silent Fall | Devenir oiseau | Becoming Bird | Convertirse en ave at Centre SAGAMIE, 2023 and Déclin des animaux | Animal Population Decline | Disparaître, Disappearing, Desaparecer at Centre Sagamie, 2024. These monographs’ texts are in French, English and Spanish.

Commentaries on her work have been published in HuffPost, Time Out, New York: The Cut, Art Slant, SFAQ, Photograph, Whitehot Magazine and The Washington Post.

The curator

National and international influence

Aldouby previously served as lead curator for IDEASxLab, where she advanced artists as creative agents of change under the National Endowment for the Arts' “Our Town” initiative. She is also the co-founder of Artea Projects, a New York City-based organization supporting public art, where she directed RE: CONSTRUCTION, a commission by the Alliance for Downtown New York. Her curatorial work has been presented internationally, including the 51st and 52nd Venice Biennale (International Artists’ Museum) and in Times Square with ZAZ10.

Engagement for education

Aldouby is the founder of Voices of Multiplicity (VoM), a socially engaged artist residency focused on eco-justice, knowledge production, and experiential learning. She also served as president of the Community Art Caucus of the National Art Education Association. Aldouby is a professor in the Art and Art Education Program, Columbia University, Teachers College, and holds a doctorate in Art & Art Education with a focus on community arts (Ed.d). 

ayelet Danielle aLdoulby

Curator, educator, and researcher, Ayelet Aldouby specializes in public art, socially engaged art practice with a focus on wellness and care ethics. She is the founder of ARTMobile, a mobile studio offering creative, research-informed art engagements in public spaces, and serves as a special projects consultant at Residency Unlimited.
